Fano Convolutional FEC Decoder (FANO-FD)

The Fano Decoder is a general purpose convolutional decoder able to decode high constraint-length convolutionally encoded signals. It implements the Fano algorithm to sequentially decode incoming data, which, in contrast to the Viterbi algorithm, is able to cope with high constraint lengths whilst still yielding a compact design.

The core decodes a rate 1/2 code, specified in the form of two polynomials of up to 96 bits in size. Input data is supplied to the core as 5-bit 2's complement "soft bits", and decoded according to either a supplied metric table, held internally in RAM, or a default metric table implemented internally as logic.

Code rates other than 1/2 can be supported by externally puncturing the code to the desired standard. Silicon Infusion can supply design services to implement this and other features, such as symbol demapping and disambiguation, lock detection, etc, if desired.
